What is Domestic Violence?
Domestic Violence is the use of violence and abuse to gain power and control over a partner or former partner. Partners may be married, divorced, separated, living together, or dating; heterosexual, gay or lesbian.

Domestic violence often involves physical abuse, but also can include isolation, verbal abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, and economic control. It can happen all the time or once in a while.

Who is Affected By Domestic Violence?
Victims can be of any age, race, sexual orientation, faith, culture, education level, marital status, ability, or employment.

Most children in these homes know about the violence. Even if children are not physically hurt, they may have behavioral and emotional problems as a result.

Are You (or Someone You Care About) in An Abusive Relationship?
Does your partner…

  • Call you names?
  • Humiliate you in public?
  • Threaten to hurt you or people you care about?
  • Push, hit or kick you?
  • Keep you from contacting family or friends?
  • Withhold your medication?
  • Force you to have sex?
  • Destroy your personal property?
  • Take away your assistive equipment (wheelchair, cane)?
  • Accuse you of causing problems in the relationship?
  • Do any one of these things and then promise never to do it again?

If so, then you are NOT alone. It is NOT your fault. Help is available and you have choices.

All services of Compass Center are free and confidential and available in English and Spanish. They strive to provide accessible accommodations.
